Our Test – Procedure

We assemble the test-setups according to customer needs. In most cases one cell is sandwiched between pressure plates, heaters and temperature-sensing layers. Optionally, nail-penetration machine is attached.

 

Then we place the assembly into one of the two pressure-tight reactors, set the SOC, set required atmosphere (N2 or air) and execute the test: We initiate thermal-runaway (TR) with over-temperature, hot-spot, over-charge, nail-penetration or custom trigger.
During TR the cell releases heat and gas. The reaction is monitored with multiple sensors: temperatures, voltage, pressure, video/sound feed, comprehensive gas-composition analysis with GC and FTIR.

 

After the test we remove the cell and asses the cell-damage: we measure cell-mass loss, document cell-case damage evidence and take particle samples for analysis.

 

Finally, we analyze measured data and compile a report.

Our test results help to find the right cell for the application. The tests help to comply with regulations, to stop thermal runaway propagation and to mitigate explosion and intoxication risk.

 

We can assess implementation of early warning and test expanded operation envelope for critical situations where the battery can not be simply switched off.

Gas Analysis

During TR the Li-ion cells release burnable and toxic gas. We quantify the gas-composition with calibrated Inficon microGC Fusion (GC) and Bruker MATRIX-MG01 (FTIR) spectrometer.
