iEXODDUS Drives Innovation in CCAM Technologies

Jan 22, 2025

The future of mobility is autonomous – but challenges such as road works, bad weather or unmarked roads make the use of self-driving vehicles difficult. This is where the EU-funded iEXODDUS project comes in: under the leadership of Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH, 14 industry and research partners are working to make autonomous driving systems safer and more efficient.

The focus is on expanding the Operational Design Domains (ODDs). An ODD is fundamental for the safety of connected and automated mobility (CCAM). It describes the specific operating conditions under which CCAM can be used safely. iEXODDUS is developing advanced algorithms to help vehicles cope with complex scenarios and minimize human intervention.

Selim Solmaz, Head of Control Systems Group and Lead Researcher at VIRTUAL VEHICLE:

“The iEXODDUS project is at the forefront of advancing digital technologies and navigation services, aligning with goals for increased safety, security, and sustainability in the mobility sector, ultimately paving the way for safer and more reliable automated transportation.”

The benefits are promising: improved road safety, fewer accidents and a smoother traffic flow reduce congestion and emissions. Digital twins ensure real-time data integration, while optimized sensor technologies expand the vehicles’ perception capabilities.
At the same time, iEXODDUS lays the foundation for standardized and interoperable technologies that can be deployed across Europe.

Through practical demonstrations and interdisciplinary collaboration, the project aims to make autonomous vehicles ready for everyday use – for connected, safe and sustainable mobility on Europe’s roads.
